In contrast
to the very large works of some contemporary artists, I
prefer smaller formats. Nevertheless the concept of space is a recurring area
of interest throughout my work: actual space, implied space, interior, exterior
space, 2D – 3-dimensional space. Early in my
career, I worked in a style akin to magical realism before passing through
various stages to arrive at abstraction, allowing me to focus wholly on the
essence of painting. I use (what are often perceived as) simple materials—paper, cardboard, used
wood and occasionally found objects. In that my work belongs to the concept of
the “arte povera - poor art” movement. In other words
it’s about going back to basics. My aim is
not to make a political statement or to position myself within the broader
political landscape (in that, I am making a political statement 😊); rather, my interest lies in the use of colour,
form, structure, balance and working with different types of materials. I
experiment with the concept of “order versus chaos”, with “artistic rules” and stepping
playfully over “artistic boundaries” (boundaries that, nowadays have to be
discovered in the first place). I produce my own paper and material supports
quite often, focusing entirely on painting itself rather than on concepts and
themes.
